I learned to drive in Central OR where speed limits weren't too strictly enforced, most people went 10-15 mph over the limit, and got used to that way of driving. last year i moved up to the Portland area where the cops are way more ticket happy. Long story short I managed to get three tickets and one wreck in the past year, leading me to get my license suspended for 90 days starting 30 days from some time next week. What really sucks is that the wreck wasn't my fault and one of the tickets was for 5 over while being tailgated by someone. I guess its just because I look younger than I am, I'm 22 but look like I'm about 17. Anyhow I've taken full responsibility now for speeding and wont be even touching anywhere over the speed limit now. Anyone else have any advice for dealing with this? I know I'm applying for a hardship permit so i can get to and from work.

I'm 24 and dealing with the same problem .. The problem could be in what you drive or how the car you drive has been modified ...

The cops down here in Austin don't judge younger people because we have so many going to college here it would be stupid for them to try cause everyone looks like they are going to school here....

Learn to live and love the mass transit options you have or huff it on a bike (electric if you live around or commute through a bunch of hills) wherever you can. I'm not sure how easy it will be to get a hardship license.

I drive a BRZ, I should have known better at the time I got my last ticket, my GF warned me that cops like to camp out behind the supports for a few of the overpasses on the way to her place.

you need a note from your employer and an sr-22 from your insurance, I called the DMV right after I got the sentence.

I'll also guess that you drive a sporty loud car and dress fairly scruffy. Been there.

You're a total target when you're that age and fit that profile. You can be going 5 over being passed by a fleet of Priuses going 20 over and the cop will still pick you to ticket. If your car is modified enough to be individually identifiable it's even worse. Mind your Ps and Qs.

I don't know about OR, but in VA getting a work permit seems to be standard practice based on the folks I know who have received suspensions so hopefully you're good there. Check into if they offer classes which can remove points from your license and if anything is still pending consider getting a lawyer.

We actually have fairly similar laws as VA, but we don't have a point system its just 4 incidents within a certain time period.

Losing my licence for 30 days is one of the best things that ever happened to me. It really taught me to respect the vehicle and the others around you. It's been 3 years since then and I have not got a ticket since.

losing your license for 90 days < never speeding again for the next 50-60 years.

it might save someone's life.

(I'm not in any way implying you are a bad or reckless driver)

get a V1 radar detector and an attorney. it will end up costing you less than not making any money by not working. or just be a grandma driving around.

It's too bad you are past sentencing, as you might have been able to hire a lawyer to get you out of one or more of those situations. Sure it's expensive, but compared to the hassle of not driving it's worth it.

You are lucky Portland has pretty good public transportation.

The best tip I ever got on speeding was from my father: never be the fastest or flashiest car within sight, and certainly don't be both.

If it comes to it i can probably just remote in to work, because I'm on a computer all day anyways. but yeah I plan on not speeding anymore and probably investing money on track days to get it out of my system.

yeah unfortunately I don't have much money to spend on anything, And both my cars are attention grabbers. I had a Legacy wagon but it was lost in a wreck that wasn't my fault but still counted against me, and the judge wasn't listening to reason. I would have gotten a Lawyer if I could afford one.

I don't plan on staying in the Portland area longer than I have too. I moved because of work and it was fine for maybe the first month or two but I hate city life and miss the country, but I'm going to be up here for about 6 more years before i have what i need to launch my own company back home.

I've gotten pulled over 3 times within the last 2 months, received 1 ticket. Soonest was last week. Both cops that gave me a warning just wanted to get a better look at the car.

That used to happen to me back in Central OR. There was on state trooper that would pull me over just to ask if I had tracked my RS yet. I miss those days the cops around Portland are more interested in making a profit off of tickets.

I had the same scenario happen to me, but the penalty was only 30 days for me. I just drove anyway....

Not smart, but no fucking way am I biking 20 miles each way to work in the winter. I only drove to work and had my wife drive everywhere else.

Anyway, I haven't gotten a ticket in almost 3 years since then and I attribute that to:

1. Not standing out and being the one person zipping around everywhere.

2. Hauling ass up to and including the speed limit. Not more than 3 over.

3. Learning where the cops hide out.

4. Not driving in the HOV/free-money-for-the-state lane.

5. Generally not being an asshat.

6. Not being in a hurry.

7. Listening to chill music while driving.

8. Not listening to music at all and just enjoying the drive.

9. ????
